Created on October 1, 1996, Ebonyi state covers a total area of 5,530 km2 (2,140 sq mi) and has a total population of 2,176,947 as at the 2006 census. With an average population density of 393/km2 (1017/sq mi) and a total GDP (2010) of $2,732 Million, at $1,232 Per Capita.
Ebonyi is located in the South-Eastern Nigeria. Ebonyi has boundaries with Benue State in the north, Cross-River in the east, Enugu in the north-west and Abia in the south-east.
The people of this state are Igbos with several dialects and have a rich cultural heritage. This is expressed in the colourful dances namely Nkwa Umuagbogho of Afikpo and Nkwa Nwite. The pottery works of Ishiagu also form part of the rich culture of the State.
The people of Ebonyi State are predominantly farmers. Main crops obtained in this state are palm produce, cocoa, maize, groundnut, rice, yam, plantain, banana, cassava, melon, sugarcane, local beans, fruits and vegetables. Fishing is also carried out in Afikpo. The state is blessed with mineral resources such as lead, limestone, zinc, marble and salt.
David Nweze Umahi (known popularly as Dave Umahi, born January 1, 1964) is the current Governor Of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. He is a certified engineer and was born into the humble family of Elder Chief Joseph Umahi Nwaze of Umunaga, Uburu autonomous community in Uburu Clan, Ohaozara Local Government Area of present day Ebonyi State on January 1, 1964. He attended Umunaga Primary School in Uburu from 1971 to 1977 where he bagged his First Leaving School Certificate with Distinction. Engr. Dave Umahi began his secondary education at Ishiagu High School in 1978 and did Class 1 and first term of class 2 in 1979 before he was admitted into the prestigious Government Secondary School Afikpo, where he completed his Secondary Education. Dave got admission into the Anambra State University of Science and Technology where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from 1982 to 1987.
