Created on August 27, 1991, Delta state covers a total area of 17,698 km2 (6,833 sq mi) and has a total population of 4,112,445 as at the 2006 census. With an average population density of 150/km2 (380/sq mi) and a total GDP (2010) of $16,749 Million, at $3,990 Per Capita.
Delta is an oil-rich state in Nigeria. Located in the South-Southern Nigeria, Delta has boundaries with Edo State in the north, River State in the south-east, Ondo in the north-west Bight of Benin in the south and Anambra State in the east.
The state has a tropical climate marked by two distinct seasons, the dry and rainy season. Delta State is rich in major tubers and root crops such as cassava, cocoyams, yams and sweet potatoes. Delta State is endowed with crude oil, ranking second to Rivers State. The oil producing local government areas are Warri North and South, Burutu, Isoko North and South, Ughelli North and South, Okpe, Ethiope East and West, Sapele and Ndokwa East and West. The nation's second refinery as well as petrochemical plants is located in the state at Warri. There are various solid mineral deposits within state - industrial clay, silica, lignite, kaolin, tar sand, decorative rocks, limestone, etc. These are raw materials for industries such as brick making, ceramics, bottle manufacturing, glass manufacturing, chemical/insulators production, chalk manufacturing and sanitary wares, decorative stone cutting and quarrying.
Arthur Okowa Ifeanyi (born 8 July 1959) is the incumbent Governor of Delta State. He was inaugurated as Governor on May 29th 2015 after winning the state elections conducted in April 2015. Before his Governorship, he was elected Senator for Delta North, inDelta State, Nigeria, in the April 2011 national elections. He ran on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He is from Ika ethnic Nationality in Delta State, Nigeria. He is also the first person from Delta North and specifically of Anioma origin to clinch the governorship position of Delta State
